Mary Sues

Okay, apparently some people can't grasp the concept of what a real Mary Sue is. No, she's not every female fan character ever created, and there's more to it than just making her an official/cannon-character's love interest.

To qualify as an official %100 genuine Mary Sue, the character.....

...Has unbelievable god-like powers with no apparent weaknesses. She knows all, sees all, and only realizes every single one of her great powers when it's dire during certain perilous and life-threatening situations. Not to mention, she's either got one of the cannon's ability times ten- or all of the cannons' abilities. Like some freaky hybrid. She often has names that are taken from other obsessions, sometimes spelled a different way- a failure in trying to be original.

...Has no unique characteristics or personality. She often appears to be a re-color, or a trace with added features that are a poor attempt to make it unique because the cell line art remains crisp and clean while they did a shite job in Windows paint with a blunt brush tool.

To sum it up simply... void of originality or creativity.

HOWEVER......this is important too so pay attention. A Mary Sue is NOT.......

...any fan character that ultimately becomes a cannon character's love interest.
...has a normal name like "Jessie", "Mary", or "Annie". What's in a name, seriously? I prefer unique names, but that's just me.
...is limited to the female gender. Though the male version is "Marti Stu"
...characters with great power and/or significance. As long as the character is not phenomenally powerful (unless you plan on putting God in your story) with a sickening list of shape shifting, alchemical, magical, metamorphic, supernatural, elemental, celestial, necrotic, empathetic, and chaotic abilities.
...a fan character that has their own story/comic. But it should be titled in a way that makes it clear that it isn't about the cannons. Many fan characters gain interest and buttloads of fans, so it would be understandable if the fan is encouraged to elaborate on the char's background. It actually makes them less of a Sue/Stu :) (Unless they overshadow the cannons in a cannon-oriented story. Like having a comic titled "Knuckles: Guardian of the Floating Island" and have 'Katie-Jen' take up %90 of the story)

Hmmm......that's all I can think of to say. I just had to get that out there. I've had a few notes saying negative things about Haze, Muri-Na, and even Emerald. They are NOT Mary-Sues. :P Learn what one is first before you go dropping that bomb on people!

The male counterpart is also called "Gary Stu" at times :B

I don't think a character's physical power really has much bearing on their "Sue" status, as long as their powers don't encroach on the abilities/roles of other characters.

Usually what makes a Sue a Sue is the inherent perfections in their personality. They're usually good at everything, every character in the story loves them (except villains and whatever characters that the author doesn't like) and they become the central focus of the story, usually when there is little reason for them to be (like, if a war suddenly breaks out or the Earth has been invaded by aliens and the story focuses on the Sue's relationship or whatever). Usually Sues are given a "twagic" past, yet it almost never interferes with the character's likeability, sanity or social skills.

Lather, Rinse, Obey!
i wonder if going into the past and erasing the very first mary sue would stop this sort of thing from ever happening XD

Hey,thanks. I appreciate this post a lot. Whenever I'm looking for commissions and what not, I get worried about asking for my OC's to be drawn... people are usually turned off by the idea of OC's, even though most of mine are from my own series, I get really paranoid about them being called Mary Sues. But, y'know, I've read things like this before, and they really aren't. However, those ignorant people who don't do much research and look at a fancharacter who is a cute girl, often assume and then BITCH at an artist. :/ So retarded.

Thanks for enlightening the public. Hopefully people actually learn something from this.

Bitchy? Sorry I wasn't taught how to say fuck you politely. ^_~

Probably not. Future generations just seem to be getting stupider. Plus all the fangirls seem to want a part in a manga/anime/whatever series and make a perfect version of themselves to win over the heart of male character. ~_~ I doubt this would change ever. It's childish, but I sort of understand where they are coming from. The main problem I have with it, is when people start to assume that any female(male?) OC is a Mary Sue. That's when it's harmful for us artists who aren't creating childish characters.

Hm... It's made me worry about my first fan character, Cocoa. She started out as kind of a fangirl act, but she's changed a lot since I first created her.

She has major powers, but she also had a background of how she got those powers in the first place. lol I guess I'm just worried about what other people might think of her. XD She's, like, a part of who I am. XDD She's not all-powerful and all-knowing all the time, or all at one time really, but yeah... I don't know if I need to work on her a bit more. XD

Yeah. XD lol

Let me include my Bleep Yeah for this Journal Entry. It seems that many people are too quick to give any OC the infamous "Mary Sue" label. In fact, that's part of the reasons why I'm rewriting one of my earliest fanfictions into an completely original story.

lol I can't help to be worried though. XDD Some people kind of give fan-made characters a bad name. ^^' lol XD Ugh. It irritates me when they just create some kind of re-color. XD

Name: Blah
Personality: Exactly the same as this character
Looks: like this character but has a scar on his eye.

D: ?? lol Yeah... Blabbering. XD Fun stuff.
